Letter from the Tichenor Family
February 2003
Dear Purdue Alums and Friends,
Fifty years ago our father, Art Tichenor, was the International Student Office director for Purdue University. Many students passed through the office--and our home--in the 31 years that he served Purdue in this position. Purdue and West Lafayette became a home away from home for many of you, and we remember meeting many of you over the years.
To honor our father and to assist future international students at Purdue, we have started a special scholarship fund which we plan to endow, ensuring that our father's memory will live on forever and annually support international student scholarships.
Our father, who now lives in Colorado, will be 86 this year. He still receives correspondence from students whom he helped over the years. He returned to West Lafayette and Purdue recently to see the changes in the campus and visit the International Student and Scholar office (ISS). There are more than 4,700 international students at Purdue today and 700 faculty and staff from 132 countries. Purdue has the highest proportion of international students of any public university in the USA and you are a part of the rich cultural diversity that is Purdue's history.
You faced challenges very different from those of American national students, and succeeded. The current ISS office offers numerous social and cultural programming options to students. It also advises and offers counseling services. Please take a look at the web site that highlights their services:
Our goal is to raise $50,000 for the Art H. Tichenor Jr. Scholarship Fund. We hope that you will join us in honoring our father and leaving a legacy for a job well done. A gift of $100, $500, $1,000 or more will help us to realize our father's dreams that every international student has a unique, rewarding, and meaningful educational experience at Purdue University. To aid you in making a contribution by credit card, log on to this web site:
Note: In the Gift (select a designation) box, select International Programs . In the Special Instructions box, note Art Tichenor Scholarship so your gift is credited to the correct fund.
Thank you for helping both to honor our father and to assist tomorrow's international students at Purdue University.
Sincerely,
Sarah Tichenor Wallace, Purdue BS 1975
Arthur H. Tichenor, Indiana BS 1970
Lucy Tichenor Wallace, Purdue BA 1971
Charles Tichenor, Purdue BS 1982
