Giving Opportunities for International Students and Scholars

1. Arthur H. Tichenor Jr. Scholarship Fund

Purdue University prides itself on having one of the largest enrollments of international students among all public universities in the nation. The origin of this distinguished status goes back to 1951, when Purdue President Fred Hovde hired Art Tichenor as International Student Office director. Tichenor started an international student program virtually from scratch, working with admissions, helping with language problems and financial assistance, and involving people in the community to help international students adjust to their new home-away-from-home. International students numbered 148 when he arrived at Purdue and grew tenfold to 1,500 when he retired in 1982. Tichenor's extraordinary program laid the foundation for Purdue University to establish a continuous international reputation. Today, in the 2004-2005 academic year, 4,921 international students from 128 countries study at Purdue.

The Arthur H. Tichenor Jr. Scholarship Fund is a new fund started by his family to honor the Director Emeritus. To date, more than $20,000 has been raised, and we invite you to consider helping us achieve our $150,000 goal. Funding to support this scholarship will allow us to fulfill his dream and help Purdue further prosper as a preeminent university.

2. Go Purdue!
GO (Global Outreach) Purdue! is an initiative of the Office of International Students and Scholars. GO Purdue! seeks to provide cultural, educational, service and social opportunities whereby international students will enhance their American educational experience and contribute to the globalization of Purdue and the greater community.

Opportunities abound with GO Purdue! Interested in making friends with an American family? Check out the International Friendship Program (IFP). Interested in sharing your culture with American young people? Be an Educational Education Program (EEP) volunteer. Want to educate others about your country? Take part in International Awareness Week (IAW). Want to explore Indiana and surrounding places of interest? Sign up for a GO Purdue! Trip. Are you ready to share a meal, discuss differing cultural perspectives and just "hang out" with new friends? Join in the fun of Friday night Perspectives. The opportunities are endless to make your stay at Purdue a positive and life-changing adventure.

International Friendship Program (IFP)
Offered to new international students this program provides the opportunity to meet and become friends with an American individual or family from the Greater Lafayette Area. This is a unique program that literally hundreds of students and community residents have benefited from over the past few years.

Educational Exchange Program (EEP)
Provides international understanding to the Greater Lafayette community by bringing Purdue University international students into high school, middle and elementary school classrooms as well as into civic organizations. Students in this program share insight into their home culture and community.

Cultural Perspectives
PERSPECTIVES: Everyone has them! Come and share your Perspectives Friday's at 4:30 p.m. in Schleman B38. This group discusses everything from Media in the United States to Friendship and Dating in the U.S. This is a great way for you to meet others from all over the world and also share and listen to others in an informal setting. Free Pizza from Papa John's is also provided at these meetings! Look forward to seeing you Friday's as we make Purdue a little smaller with discussion, fun, and learning! Orientation Volunteers
Each fall and spring semester ISS student volunteers help new international students with matters such as arrival pick-up, ISS check-in process, and general orientation needs.

International Awareness Week
Since the fall of 2000, Purdue University has had more international students than any other public university in the United States. The International Awareness Week is an opportunity for all Purdue University students, faculty, and staff to acknowledge, explore and celebrate the many cultures that are represented by our international students and visiting scholars. All events are open to the Lafayette - West Lafayette community.

Translation/Interpreting
Community organizations sometimes need help with translating non-English documents or with interpreting a language other than English into English, or vice versa. This is a volunteer program that requires little time.
